Robin Williams & How Golf Was Invented

Many years ago in New York at the “Catch a Rising Star” nightclub, a close friend and I stopped for a nightcap. It was late, and while we only wanted to say for that one drink, with an early call in the morning, the emcee kept saying things like … “Don’t leave yet” … “a special guest is about to join us” and any number of other entreaties to stick around.

Well, we did stick around … and sure enough, Robin Williams stepped onto the stage around midnight with a barrel full of props … and I’m talking about a big barrel. He was testing out material and was riffing spontaneously as various dolls, stuffed animals and all kinds of stuff emerged from that barrel.

My friend and I quickly realized we were sitting too close to the stage as he began to riff on various audience members. Sure enough, our turn came.

We were still in full-on business suits, traditional attire all days and in all ways in those days. When Robin got around to us, he looked at us like only he could, glanced back at the audience so they would all look our way as well … and all he said was …

… and then there’s these two guys sitting here dressed like their dads ….

It got a big laugh and we joined in. His delivery was so good you couldn’t help it. Of course, we secretly appreciated the recognition … and may have had a few too many by then as well.

Great fun from a great talent.

And, yes, I know this 90 second video could have gone in the sports section, but then again …. who could be so funny in such a flash in time.
