2022 Thriller Awards. Charles Dickens Shorthand. The Mystery Corner

A few weeks back, I shared the 2022 Edgar Award nominees with you, given by the Mystery Writers of America.

This week, the 2022 Thriller Award nominees came out from the International Thriller Writers association. I’m also a member of the ITW so you’ll find some other great reads for a relaxing weekend there.

Got Time to Decode a Charles Dickens Mystery?

Huh?

That chicken scratch represents the shorthand that Charles Dickens used for the 3 years he served as a court reporter. He added his own symbols over time.

There are only 10 currently known manuscripts of his shorthand and this is one that remains undeciphered.

Enter the Dickens Code Project, a crowd-sourced effort to decode this manuscript. Enjoy this crazy but fun romp through the linguistic thicket that Dickens created.

The Mystery Corner

If you’re looking for a good book in the Mystery-Thriller-Suspense genre, look no further.

I’ve read over 2,000 books in this genre, usually at least one/week for decades, so feel free to reach out to me for some ideas.

In the meantime, here’s a summary of the almost 15,000 pages I tackled in 2021.
